I also work with many clients that are deep into addiction. These people are addicted to alcohol, cocaine, crystal meth, crack or some other form of drug. Often times, along with that, they are in abusive relationships, prostitution because they will do anything to get their next hit. It doesn’t matter age, race, background, whether someone has had a horrible childhood or a wonderful childhood. It only takes someone trying them once. And yes…it could be one of our own children.
One night a thought came to me. Why not combine my passion and love of raising and breeding cockatiels with my desire to help my clients? Why couldn’t they help me with the hand feeding of my baby cockatiels? I could teach them about hygiene. I could show them how to care for these wonderful babies. And in return they would experience something that many people don’t have the opportunity to experience and hopefully be a changed person because of it.
I decided to start with female clients. They have to make a commitment to be at my place of work once a day at a certain time. That in itself is a huge commitment and shows how much they want to do this. The babies are always be in my care and the feeding is always done under my supervision. The babies travel with me from home to work each day. Each group is no larger than 6 people. The group is very important as it is during the hand feeding that these 6 people will get to know each other, form bonds and hopefully be a support to one another. Even after the hand feeding commitment is finished I make sure that the group is able to continue to meet on a regular basis.
I believe, with all my heart, the process of hand feeding these teeny, tiny tiels will be life changing. Many of these women feel that they are utterly worthless and that because of the horrible things they have done nobody will ever want them or love them. Through the hand feeding process something emerges from these women…a natural nurturing within and a deep love that they either forgot they ever had or had never experienced before. They realize that they are worthy of love and they are capable of loving. The logo was designed with this program in mind and I would love for you to read about the four elements that make up the logo.

It is a ‘New Beginning’ for many of these ladies…and that is why I picked the name. At the end of the program each graduate receives a special certificate, a hand fed, weaned baby cockatiel* along with the cage and necessary accessories. During the time together we will be making toys for the birds and each of the ladies will not only be able to take a toy home for their baby tiel but also learn how to make them.
